Otoplasty (Ear pinning)

What is an otoplasty?

For many people, protruding, overly large, or asymmetrical ears can be a lifelong source of self-consciousness. Whether you have spent years strategically wearing your hair down to hide your ears, or you are a parent hoping to spare your child from schoolyard teasing, the emotional impact of ear shape is profound. Otoplasty (ear pinning or ear reshaping surgery) is a highly customized, transformative procedure designed to bring the ears into natural, aesthetic harmony with the rest of the face. By carefully sculpting the underlying cartilage, we can "pin back" protruding ears, reduce their size, or improve their symmetry, allowing you to finally pull your hair back and step forward with absolute confidence.

What is the right age for a child to have an otoplasty?

The ears are unique because they reach about 90% of their full adult size very early in life. We typically recommend considering otoplasty for children around age 5 or 6. At this age, the ear cartilage is fully developed enough for surgery, and we can address the issue just before they enter the first grade, which frequently prevents the psychological distress of schoolyard teasing. However, patients of any age beyond 5 are excellent candidates.

Will the surgery affect my (or my child’s) hearing?

Not at all. Otoplasty is strictly a structural reshaping of the outer ear (the pinna). We do not operate anywhere near the middle or inner ear canal where hearing functions take place. Your hearing will be completely unaffected.

Why do I have to wear a headband after surgery?

The headband is a critical part of your healing process. Following surgery, the reshaped ear cartilage is delicate and needs to be held securely in its new position while it heals. You will be sent home with a soft, supportive surgical dressing. Once that is removed (usually within a few days), you must wear a soft, wide headband (like a sports sweatband) 24 hours a day for the first week, and then every night while sleeping for an additional 4 to 6 weeks to prevent the ears from accidentally folding forward.

When can I sleep on my side again?

You must avoid putting any pressure on the healing ears, you will need to sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated for the first 2 to 3 weeks. Sleeping on your side too early can cause pain, increase swelling, or even compromise the internal sutures holding the cartilage in place.

Can the ears "unpin" or revert to how they looked before?

Because we physically reshape the cartilage and secure it with permanent internal sutures, the results of an otoplasty are considered lifelong. While it is normal for the ears to "relax" outward by a millimeter or two as the initial swelling subsides, a true surgical relapse is exceedingly rare, provided you wear your headband diligently during the critical early weeks of recovery.
