Liposuction

Almost everyone has certain areas of their body that hold onto stubborn pockets of fat. Liposuction is an effective procedure designed to permanently remove these fat cells and enhance your natural contours. Dr. Mahoney and Dr. Yeung bring a uniquely empathetic and meticulous perspective to body contouring. We understand the physical and emotional impact of feeling uncomfortable in your clothes. Our goal is never to change who you are, but rather to smooth, shape, and refine your silhouette so you can feel confident in your own skin.

Is liposuction a weight-loss procedure?

This is a common misconception. Liposuction is not designed for weight loss; it is a highly targeted body contouring procedure. It is best suited for patients who are at or very near their ideal, stable weight but have localized, stubborn pockets of fat (e.g. under the chin, arms, abdomen, flanks, thighs, etc.) that do not respond to diet and exercise.

Are the results permanent, or will the fat grow back?

The results are exceptionally long-lasting because the fat cells we remove during surgery are permanently gone and will not regenerate. However, the remaining fat cells in your body can still expand or shrink if you gain or lose a significant amount of weight. To protect your beautiful new contours, we always recommend maintaining a stable, healthy lifestyle after your procedure.

Will liposuction tighten my loose skin?

Liposuction strictly removes fat; it does not tighten skin or repair separated muscles. If you have excellent skin tone, your skin will naturally drape over your newly sculpted framework. If you have stretched or loose skin (often from pregnancy or significant weight loss), removing the fat underneath might make the sagging more pronounced. In these cases, Dr. Mahoney and Dr. Yeung will likely recommend combining liposuction with an excision procedure, like a tummy tuck or thigh lift, to achieve the smooth, firm result you desire.

What is the recovery process like?

Recovery from liposuction is generally quite manageable. You can typically expect to take 3 to 7 days off work, depending on how many areas were treated. You will need to wear a snug, specialized compression garment for several weeks to help your skin adhere to your new shape and to minimize swelling. While you will notice a difference immediately after surgery, your body needs time to heal. Your final, fully refined silhouette will gradually emerge over 3 to 6 months as all the residual swelling subsides.

Will I have noticeable scars?

One of the greatest benefits of liposuction is that the incisions required are incredibly small—usually less than a quarter of an inch long. We meticulously place these tiny incisions in natural body creases or hidden areas (like the belly button or the bikini line) whenever possible. Over time, these small marks typically fade into very faint, barely noticeable lines.
