Inverted Nipple Correction

What is an inverted nipple correction surgery?

An inverted nipple is surprisingly a common condition. It is estimated that approximately 10% to 20% of people are born with or develop at least one inverted nipple. The nipple is pulled inward or lies flat against the areola and typically happens because the milk ducts or the connective tissue bands behind the nipple are unusually short or tight, acting like an internal tether, pulling the nipple inward. Corrective surgery involves releasing these tether points and restoring projection.

Will the procedure affect my ability to breastfeed?

It depends on the severity of the inversion and the surgical technique required. For mild cases, we can often use techniques that try to preserve the milk ducts as much as possible to maintain future breastfeeding potential. For severe (Grade 3) inversions, the short milk ducts tethering the nipple inward usually need to be divided to allow the nipple to project outward permanently. In this case, breastfeeding from that breast will likely not be possible. Dr. Mahoney and Dr. Yeung will discuss your family planning goals during your consultation to choose the best approach for you.

Will I lose sensation in my nipple?

The nipple is rich in nerve endings. As such, temporary changes in sensation, such as numbness or hypersensitivity, are very common immediately following surgery. As the tissues heal over the next few weeks to months, normal sensation typically returns for the vast majority of patients. Permanent loss of sensation is a rare risk, and our surgical techniques are meticulously designed to protect these delicate nerves.

Is the surgery painful, and will I need to go to sleep?

Inverted nipple correction is typically performed using local anesthesia, meaning you are awake but the area is completely numb. The procedure takes about an hour, and most patients report only mild discomfort during the initial numbing injection followed by a few days of tenderness that is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

What is the recovery process like?

Recovery is very quick! Most patients can return to work and light daily activities the very next day. The most critical part of your recovery is protecting the nipple from compression. You will be given a specialized protective dressing to wear inside your bra for a few weeks. This prevents physical pressure from pushing the newly corrected nipple back inward while the internal tissues heal and stabilize. Heavy lifting and strenuous upper-body workouts should be avoided for about two to three weeks.

Are the results permanent, or can the nipple invert again?

For most patients, the results are permanent. By carefully releasing the tight internal bands of tissue, the nipple is free to project naturally. There is a small risk of recurrence (the nipple pulling back inward over time), however, following your post-operative instructions (especially wearing your protective dressing) significantly minimizes this risk and helps ensure a beautiful, lasting result.
