Good candidates for eyelid surgery are healthy, non-smoking individuals with realistic expectations and no serious eye conditions. It's important to remember that the eyelids are part of the overall face—concerns like a drooping upper lid may also be related to the brow or eyelid muscle (ptosis), which may require a different approach.

Blepharoplasty is generally a safe procedure, but like all surgery, it carries some risks. These may include bleeding, infection, swelling and bruising, as well as temporary dryness, light sensitivity, or numbness around the eyes. Some patients may experience difficulty fully closing their eyes or temporary changes in eyelid position. Scarring and persistent discomfort are uncommon but possible, and in some cases, revision surgery may be needed. Changes in vision are rare, and serious complications such as vision loss are very rare.

While every patient varies, the average downtime is about 7 to 10 days. Stitches are typically removed by day 5 or 6. Bruising and swelling can be managed with cold compresses and head elevation, and most residual bruising can be covered with sunglasses or light makeup after the first week.
