Benign Skin Lesions

While discovering a new lesion can sometimes be alarming, the vast majority of these growths are completely benign. This means they are non-cancerous, harmless, and will not spread to other parts of your body. A benign skin lesion is essentially just an overgrowth of normal skin cells, fat cells, or blood vessels. While they pose no threat to your health, they can often be physically irritating if they catch on clothing or jewelry, and they can be a significant source of cosmetic self-consciousness if they appear on highly visible areas like the face, neck, or hands.

How do I know if my skin lesion is cancerous or benign?

The only way to know with absolute certainty is through a professional evaluation and a biopsy. However, benign lesions typically remain stable; they don't change size, shape, or color over time. If you notice a spot that is newly formed, growing, bleeding, itching, or failing to heal, or if a mole has irregular borders and uneven coloring (the "ABCDEs"), it requires an immediate medical assessment.

Will removing my lesion leave a scar?

We believe in absolute candor: any time the skin is cut, a scar is created. However, as plastic surgeons, our entire approach is centered around aesthetic preservation. We meticulously plan our incisions to hide within your natural skin folds, wrinkles, or shadow lines. Our goal is to ensure the resulting scar heals as a faint, flat line that becomes exceptionally difficult to notice over time.

Will my mole or bump be tested after it is removed?

Yes. It is our strict standard of practice to send all excised tissue to a specialized pathology laboratory. A pathologist will evaluate the cells under a microscope to definitively confirm your diagnosis and ensure that no abnormal cells are present. This provides you with absolute peace of mind.

Will the lesion grow back after you remove it?

For the vast majority of lesions, surgical removal is permanent. Once a benign mole, skin tag, or lipoma is completely excised, it typically does not return to that exact spot, or if it does return, it will take a long time to recur.

Is skin lesion removal covered by OHIP?

Coverage in Ontario depends entirely on the medical necessity of the removal. OHIP will cover removal of lesions that are suspicious for cancer or is definitively diagnosed as skin cancer. If the lesion is completely benign (e.g.cosmetic mole, a skin tag, lipoma or cyst) and you are choosing to remove it strictly for cosmetic reasons, it is not covered by OHIP. We will gladly discuss clear, straightforward pricing during your consultation.
